Following Select Committee Letter, Volkswagen Closes Factory in Xinjiang
WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to Volkswagen’s announcement that it will close its factory in Xinjiang and exit the region, Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party today released the following statement.
“This is an important and long overdue step, and shows the power of what Congress and the human rights advocacy community can accomplish. The CCP’s genocide against Uyghurs and other minorities in the Xinjiang region continues to this day, and it is wrong for any company to conduct any business operations in such an area. This decision from Volkswagen is a welcome one, but an overdue one at that. The Select Committee will continue holding companies accountable for their operations in Xinjiang as we work to put an end to the Uyghur genocide at the hands of the CCP.”
Volkswagen’s announcement comes following a February 2024 letter from Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi and then-Chairman Mike Gallagher to Volkswagen calling for a closure of its factory in Xinjiang.
