Ranking Member Ro Khanna Condemns Jimmy Lai’s 20-Year Sentence, Calls on Trump to Speak Out Against Beijing’s Crackdown

WASHINGTON – Representative Ro Khanna (CA-17), Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, issued the following statement in response to the 20-year prison sentence issued to pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai.

“The 20-year prison sentence handed down to Jimmy Lai is yet another example of Beijing’s crackdown on freedom. This is not about law or order. It is about silencing dissent and erasing the liberties guaranteed to residents of Hong Kong. I call on President Trump to condemn Jimmy Lai’s politically motivated sentencing and guarantee his humanitarian release. Anything short of that is a failure of American values and diplomacy,” said Ranking Member Khanna.
