Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi Statement on PRC's Civil Aviation Administration Adjustment of M503 Flight Route

February 2, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) released the following statement regarding the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC’s) Civil Aviation Administration announcing its unilateral adjustment of the disputed air route M503, with plans to start eastbound operations of routes W122 and W123, which connect to route M503.

“The PRC’s abrupt decision to unilaterally adjust a disputed flight path near Taiwan is the latest example of Beijing’s efforts to coerce Taiwan and unilaterally change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. This provocative action undermines stability, contradicts the expectations of U.S. policy that Beijing peacefully resolve its disputes with Taiwan, and further highlights the need for Taiwan’s participation in international organizations like the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The United States stands by Taiwan and vigorously opposes this and any other effort by Beijing to undermine regional stability.”
