Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi Responds to Trump–Xi Call and Potential TikTok Divestiture Deal

September 19, 2025

WASHINGTON Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, issued the following statement on the call between President Trump and General Secretary Xi:

“Earlier today, President Trump and General Secretary Xi spoke on the phone. As we await further details, including whether the potential TikTok deal would comply with the bipartisan Divestiture Law, I am deeply concerned that the President’s social media posts ignored the real stakes: standing up to the Chinese Communist Party, defending American workers, and protecting human rights. We need to save TikTok by forcing a genuine divestiture that severs Beijing’s control—what we cannot allow is the CCP retaining influence over a platform used by millions of Americans. As the in-person meetings approach, we must be crystal clear: this competition is about our economy, our security, and our values.
