Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi Highlights Select Committee Economic Report “Buy America” Recommendation Following Visit to BD Facility

January 8, 2024

Carol Stream, IL – Today, Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) visited Becton Dickinson (BD)’s Peripheral Intervention’s Brachytherapy Manufacturing Facility, one of the world’s leading global medical technology companies engaged in the development, manufacture, and sale of a broad range of medical supplies, devices, laboratory equipment, and diagnostic products, including radioactive medical device implants ("seeds") used to treat prostate cancer. Congressman Krishnamoorthi released the following statement addressing the United States’ overdependence on Chinese pharmaceutical and medical device supply chains and to highlight findings from the latest economic report in support of work from facilities like BD.

I want to thank BD for hosting us at their facility today as we discussed the importance of strengthening American manufacturing and supply chains. As my Select Committee’s recent economic report noted, our dependence on the PRC for our pharmaceutical and medical device supply chains poses a distinct national security risk. That is why our committee recommended initiating a ‘Buy America” pilot program to require Medicare, Medicaid, and other federally funded health systems to purchase basic medical devices from U.S. production facilities or from allies and trading partners. Secure supply chains are crucial to our economic security and that means building an environment in which American manufacturers, including BD, can thrive.
