Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi on Former President Trump's Comments on Taiwan: “A Betrayal of American Values”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) issued the following statement regarding comments made by former President Donald Trump in a recent interview with Bloomberg Businessweek.
“Former President Trump’s threat to abandon our nation’s longstanding, bipartisan commitments to Taiwan would mean betraying one of the world’s most vibrant democracies to the Chinese Communist Party. Failing to provide for Taiwan’s defense would not only be potentially illegal under the Taiwan Relations Act, it would be a betrayal of American values and our democratic institutions. Contrary to former President Trump’s comments, our alliances and partnerships in support of democracy are not glorified protection rackets. I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to recommit to support our allies and partners, including Taiwan, in defense of democracy.”
In the interview, which was published on Tuesday, former President Trump said, “They [Taiwan] did take about 100% of our chip business. I think, Taiwan should pay us for defence,"
“You know, we're no different than an insurance company. Taiwan doesn't give us anything."
