Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi Commends Advancement of Bipartisan Taiwan Legislation He Authored in State Department Reauthorization
WASHINGTON – Today, the House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously advanced two bipartisan amendments to strengthen U.S. support for Taiwan, both originally authored by Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The Taiwan Allies Fund Act, added to State Reauthorization by Rep. Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA) authorizes foreign assistance to support Taiwan’s partners subjected to economic coercion from the CCP. The Six Assurances to Taiwan Act, added by Rep. Greg Stanton (D-AZ), codifies into law the longstanding assurances first issued by the Reagan administration that underpin U.S. policy toward Taiwan.
“By advancing these bipartisan provisions, Congress is sending a clear signal: America will stand firm with Taiwan against coercion and intimidation from the Chinese Communist Party,” said Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi. “The Taiwan Allies Fund Act and Six Assurances to Taiwan Act strengthen the foundation of our partnership with Taiwan, combat CCP economic coercion, and reinforce peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.”
"The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is actively working to isolate Taiwan and punish its economic and diplomatic partners," said Congressman Bera, M.D. "The Taiwan Allies Fund Act reinforces our commitment to stand with our democratic partners and push back against this coercion. By providing real resources to nations that support Taiwan, we are sending a clear message: the United States will defend sovereignty, support democracy, and invest in a free and open Indo-Pacific."
“America enjoys a strong and productive partnership with Taiwan—bolstered by collaboration in technology and defense, but always rooted in our mutual commitment to democracy," said Congressman Stanton. "As the Chinese Communist Party wages an unrelenting campaign to coerce and isolate Taiwan, we’re sending a clear, bipartisan message: America stands firm in our commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific."
The Taiwan Allies Fund Act authorizes $120 million over three years to provide assistance to Taiwan’s diplomatic and economic partners at the frontlines of the CCP’s coercive campaign to diplomatically isolate Taiwan. The Six Assurances to Taiwan Act enshrines in statute the U.S. commitments that have guided Taiwan policy over four decades, solidifying our Taiwan policy and ensuring that no administration can alter them without congressional approval.
