WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), Ranking Member of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the U.S. and the CCP, appeared on Squawk Box on CNBC to discuss the Select Committee’s interim report on its initial findings from its investigation into the use of forced labor by fast fashion brands, including Shein and Temu.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi: “Temu and Shein are, as you know, some of the fastest-growing companies in the world. In particular, they use something called the de minimis exception, which means that for shipments valued at less than $800 they are able to ship directly from China to people’s homes and they are not subject to duties and there is much less information about their place of origin. Under our American law we are not able to import any goods from the Xinjiang region of China, which is where there is a genocide of the Uyghurs happening and there is massive forced labor. What we found, especially in regard to Temu, is a.) they don’t even explicitly ban products from Xinjiang and b.) it turns out they have zero compliance mechanisms to make sure that any of their goods are coming from Xinjiang. So we want to address both of these concerns as well as alert consumers, because I think consumers, all things being equal, don’t want to purchase goods that have been contaminated by slave labor or forced labor.”
