Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi on CNBC: “This is the time where [the PRC] should decide to play by global trade rules”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – This morning, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), Ranking Member of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the U.S. and CCP, and Congressman Mike Gallagher (R-IL), Chairman of the Select Committee, appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box to preview today’s debate in the committee on trade and economic engagement with the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi: “We have to do this in a way where we don’t do harm to our economy. But as you might have recognized earlier, the Chinese economy is in big trouble right now. Youth unemployment is around 22 percent, the real estate market is tanking, growth has slowed to a crawl. So this is the time where they [the PRC] should decide to play by global trade rules and engage with other countries. Perhaps there is an opportunity where their current situation could materialize into better behavior. But until then, we have to make sure we protect ourselves and we onshore what needs to be onshored, and we friendshore other items as well."
