Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi On the Biden-Harris Administration’s Trade Actions To Protect American Workers From The Chinese Communist Party’s Predatory Trade Practices

September 13, 2024

WASHINGTONRanking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party issued the following statement in response to the Biden-Harris Administration’s set of trade actions today that support American workers and businesses while holding the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) accountable for its unfair trade practices and address the flood of packages entering the United States under the de minimis threshold:

“The Biden-Harris Administration’s final decision on the Section 301 tariffs, after a thorough and thoughtful review led by Ambassador Tai, protects American workers and businesses, and encourages supply chain diversification and resilience, while holding the CCP accountable for its predatory and unfair trade practices. I also welcomed the announcement from the Administration addressing the explosion of de minimis shipments into the United States, mainly from the People’s Republic of China.

The Select Committee has sounded the alarm through our hearings and investigative reports that current de minimis rules have led to the rapid increase of illicit shipments of fentanyl and fentanyl precursors, as well as goods that do not meet consumer product safety standards and are made with forced labor, including from the CCP’s ongoing genocide of Uyghurs and other minority groups. The executive action announced by the Administration is an important step in the right direction, but the American people need Congress to step up. I look forward to continuing to work with the Biden-Harris Administration to craft real solutions that enhance our competitiveness, repair our industrial base, and protect American consumers, workers, and companies.”
