Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi Applauds New Export Controls from Commerce Department
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) issued the following statement regarding new actions announced by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) designed to further impair the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) capability to produce advanced-node semiconductors that can be used in the next generation of advanced weapon systems and in artificial intelligence and advanced computing, which have significant military applications.
“Over the past two years, the Commerce Department has advanced a set of export controls that has significantly enhanced our nation’s security – helping to deny the CCP access to semiconductors that are critical to a wide variety of sensitive military technologies and ensuring American innovation is not used to harm Americans. Amid the CCP’s efforts to indigenize production, today’s additional export controls are an essential step to limit the CCP’s access to dual-use technologies that are used to provide its military and surveillance state with the ability to undermine our interests and values. These targeted controls will not only impair the CCP’s ability to produce advanced-node semiconductors that could be used in a range of military technologies, but also hinder their development of other advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, that could be used for nefarious purposes. Working with our allies and partners, implementation of the Commerce Department’s new export controls will be a vital effort to counter the CCP.”
