Ranking Member Khanna Demands Answers on Reported Security Risks in White House Mobile App

WASHINGTON – Today, Ranking Member Ro Khanna (D-CA) of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party sent a letter to the White House raising national security and privacy concerns over reports that the official White House mobile app may contain software from restricted Chinese telecommunications company Huawei and components linked to a Russia-founded technology firm. While the Select Committee has not independently verified these reports, the allegations raise cybersecurity concerns that warrant immediate explanation from the White House.

In the letter, Khanna warns that if accurate, the reported inclusion of a Huawei software development kit could expose Americans' personal data to potential collection by foreign intelligence services. He also raises concerns about reported cybersecurity vulnerabilities, third-party tracking technologies, and the app's use of externally hosted software. He also objects to the Administration’s use of the official government app to promote political content.

Khanna is seeking answers on the app's security review process, whether any foreign-linked software has been removed, what data may have been shared with third parties, and whether the administration will suspend distribution of the app until questions aboutits cybersecurity and privacy concerns are fully addressed.

“The White House should not be violating Americans’ data privacy, and it certainly should not expose them to potential intelligence collection by foreign governments,” Khanna concludes.

Khanna requests a response by August 1, 2026.
