Krishnamoorthi Warns Against Taiwan Concessions as Trump Prepares to Meet Xi Amid Continued PLA Incursions

October 29, 2025

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), issued the following statement on the upcoming summit between President Trump and General Secretary Xi and recent People’s Liberation Army (PLA) activities around Taiwan:

“As President Trump meets General Secretary Xi in South Korea, a concerted CCP campaign to pressure Taiwan and alter the U.S.’s longstanding policy toward the democracy is underway. The PLA’s latest incursions into the airspace near Taiwan reflect how emboldened Xi feels to coerce Taiwan and have Trump appease him by backing away from our longstanding partner in Taiwan. Meanwhile, it is clear Xi is seeking a change to U.S. policy on the issues of independence and sovereignty over Taiwan.

We must make clear: Taiwan is off the table in any negotiation with the CCP. The Administration’s decision in recent months to withhold essential military aid and diplomatic reassurances to Taiwan has been read in Beijing as a sign of weakness and an invitation to aggression. We must uphold our commitments under the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances and prevent any concessions to the CCP that destabilize the Indo-Pacific and risk conflict.”
