Krishnamoorthi on Liberation Day Tariffs: “Complete capitulation of American global leadership that will only benefit the Chinese Communist Party”
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, in response to the new set of harmful tariffs announced by President Donald Trump as part of “Liberation Day”, Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party issued the following statement.
“The Trump Administration’s reckless “Liberation Day” agenda is not a liberation of any kind—it is a complete capitulation of American global leadership that will only benefit the Chinese Communist Party. By isolating the United States from our allies and partners, these policies will create a leadership vacuum on the world stage that the CCP will be more than eager to fill. And Americans will pay for it, even beyond higher prices.
“Blanket tariffs, threats of trade wars against major trading partners, and the systematic dismantling of the federal government’s ability to respond to crises are not signs of strength—they are signs of retreat. We should be forging stronger coalitions to compete with China, but instead, the Trump Administration is keen on turning our back on the very partnerships that have helped keep the U.S. strong and secure for generations.
“While we alienate our closest friends and undercut our own institutions, Beijing is watching—and moving. In America’s place, the CCP will work to deepen its influence in global markets, expand its diplomatic reach, and accelerate its efforts to remake the world in its authoritarian image.
“The Democratic members of the Select Committee will continue fighting for a smart, strategic, and united approach to countering the CCP. We cannot afford to go it alone—or go backwards—like the Trump Administration seems hellbent on doing.”
