Krishnamoorthi: Forcing Ukraine to Concede Territory ‘Threatens U.S. Security From Europe to the Pacific’
WASHINGTON – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, issued the following statement in response to reports of a proposed Ukraine settlement, warning that rewarding Moscow’s invasion would embolden Beijing, weaken U.S. deterrence, and signal to authoritarian adversaries that aggression is acceptable.
“An agreement that rewards Moscow’s invasion with stolen territory while weakening Ukraine’s ability to defend itself will not bring lasting peace. It would invite further aggression, embolden Beijing to use force against Taiwan and across the South China Sea, weaken U.S. deterrence in Europe, divide NATO, and signal that the United States is willing to abandon a fellow democracy. The Chinese Communist Party remains the chief enabler of Putin’s war, supplying the dual-use technology that sustains his military while deepening a ‘no-limits’ partnership that threatens U.S. security from Europe to the Pacific. Appeasement will never safeguard the United States or our allies. Forcing Ukraine to legitimize Putin’s grip on territory seized through an unprovoked invasion would signal to the Chinese Communist Party and adversaries across the world that America is willing to accept aggression rather than confront it. History shows that such concessions do not prevent conflict; they fuel it.”
