Krishnamoorthi, Eight Select Committee Democrats Condemn Visa Revocations Targeting Chinese Students By Trump Administration

May 30, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) and Reps. Kathy Castor (D-FL), Andre Carson (D-IN), Seth Moulton (D-MA), Ro Khanna (D-CA), Ritchie Torres (D-NY), Shontel Brown (D-OH), Greg Stanton (D-AZ), and Jill Tokuda (D-HI), of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party issued the following statement regarding the Trump Administration’s plan to revoke the visas of Chinese students.

“We must take national security threats from the Chinese Communist Party seriously—but blanket visa revocations targeting Chinese students are not the answer. When legitimate concerns arise, they should be fully addressed in a targeted, evidence-based way that rejects xenophobia and respects individual rights.

“International students, including from China, have long contributed to our universities, economy, and innovation with many students ultimately becoming Americans themselves. Turning away all Chinese students through an untargeted, discriminatory policy undermines our values, spreads a culture of fear, fuels anti-Asian hate, weakens our institutions, and plays into the hands of our adversaries, including the Chinese Communist Party itself. We should be pushing for these students to stay here in America for the long term, where they can and do contribute to our economic prosperity through new businesses and scientific breakthroughs. Our immigrants have always been a driver of U.S. innovation, and while we must ensure our national security, we must also remember that America’s strength lies in openness—not fear.”
