Krishnamoorthi Calls on Incoming Undersecretary of State to Retract Statements on Abandoning Taiwan, Blaming Uyghurs for Genocide
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Ranking Member Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the CCP issued the following statement regarding past statements made by Darren Beattie, the U.S. State Department’s next Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs.
“Past statements by the State Department’s next Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Darren Beattie, are deeply concerning and entirely inappropriate for one of the top American diplomats setting the country’s foreign policy. His repeated calls for a ‘grand deal’ sacrificing Taiwan, which is a vibrant democracy and longstanding partner of the U.S., to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for undefined ‘concessions’ on Antarctica and Africa are contrary to both American interests and values. His apparent sympathy for the CCP extends to its ongoing genocide against the Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities, whom he blames for the CCP’s human rights atrocities. These statements have no place in America’s foreign policy, and we call on Mr. Beattie to retract them immediately.”
