Krishnamoorthi Calls AGOA Renewal a Strategic Step Against China’s Expanding Foothold
WASHINGTON – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ranking Member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, issued the following statement in response to the House’s vote to renew the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA):
“Renewal of the African Growth and Opportunity Act is not simply a trade exercise but a strategic necessity. As the House voted to reinstate trade preferences for sub-Saharan African nations, it is clear that the aim is to strengthen the partnerships that give African countries a better alternative to Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative,” said Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi. “I will continue to press for long-term reforms to ensure that U.S. engagement in Africa is not reactive and not overshadowed by the CCP’s expanding foothold. The goal is simple: uplift African economies and create a stronger and more resilient partnership that prevents Beijing from dictating Africa’s economic future.”
